Political analyst Luis Dávila Colón sharply criticized the government's handling of public funds earmarked for Miss Universe, alleging a "cover-up" by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company amid questions about disbursements, contractors and subcontractors tied to the pageant. On his program En La Mirilla, broadcast on NotiUno 630, Dávila Colón said the documents delivered so far do not, in his interpretation, allow the figures for the event to add up, and he questioned where a $5 million disbursement ended up.
"There is a cover-up by Tourism," he said, alleging the agency "does not hand over documents, the numbers don't add up." He also questioned the appearance of several companies that, he claimed, are not clearly identified within the agreements related to the pageant, and demanded to know who the contractors, subcontractors, lobbyists, public relations consultants and lawyers receiving event-related funds are.
His remarks come as the Senate reviews documentation on public funds for hosting Miss Universe in Puerto Rico. He also referred to statements by Senator Marissa "Marissita" Jiménez in an interview with Carmen Jovet. Beyond the fund handling, he criticized the use of nearly $10 million in public money for a beauty contest, calling it "a scandal in a Puerto Rico that is broke."
He clarified he does not oppose private companies producing such events, only their public financing.
