Southwest Airlines will add a new direct route between Kansas City, Missouri, and Puerto Rico as part of its expansion to the island. The new flight will connect Kansas City International Airport (MCI) with Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) and will begin operating in June 2027, initially on Saturdays during the summer months. According to the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the new route will represent 1,575 additional seats to Puerto Rico during the announced period and is estimated to have an economic impact of $1.3 million.

Governor Jenniffer González Colón and Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel welcomed the new route, citing its potential to attract visitors from the central United States and boost the local economy. The new service is expected to benefit tourism-related sectors such as hotels, restaurants, and attractions by facilitating travel from Kansas City and surrounding areas.
