Why this matters: The recognition of Marie Ramos Rosado highlights the importance of promoting Afro-Puerto Rican women’s representation in various fields, including literature, education, and the arts, in Puerto Rico.

Marie Ramos Rosado, a renowned Afro-Puerto Rican writer, will be recognized on Sunday during the Second Literary Festival in Trujillo Alto, at the Coliseo Rubén Montañez, starting at 10:00 AM. Born in Río Piedras, Ramos Rosado was raised in the university city’s communities and residences. In 1973, she moved to New York for employment but returned to Puerto Rico six months later with a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Education with a focus on Spanish and a doctorate in Hispanic studies.

Her research focuses on the representation of black women in literature, and her books, 'Destellos de negritud: investigaciones caribeñas’ and 'La mujer negra en la literatura puertorriqueña: cuentística de los años setenta', have been presented in Europe, the US, the Caribbean, and Africa. Ramos Rosado advocates for greater representation of black women and questions the use of racist terms in language.

She has called for the development of Afro-Puerto Rican women in all fields, including sports, sciences, literature, and beauty pageants.
