Why this matters: Elderly residents of Caguas and surrounding areas may be at risk of being targeted by scams like this, and are advised to be cautious when seeking vehicle repairs.

Carlos Reyes Torres, a 49-year-old mechanic from Caguas, has been charged with crimes including aggravated illegal appropriation, fraud, and mistreatment of elderly individuals. According to the investigation, Reyes Torres would take vehicles from his mostly elderly victims, aged 67 to 91, for repairs, but would not complete the work, receiving over $45,000 in payments. One vehicle, a 2003 Nissan Sentra, could not be recovered.

The case was presented to Judge Karina Díaz Pérez, who determined there was probable cause for arrest and set a $28,000 bond, which Reyes Torres posted, and he was released on provisional liberty with electronic supervision. The investigation was led by agents Carmen González, José López, and Luis Morales of the Stolen Vehicle Investigations Division in Caguas.

The authorities are urging anyone who believes they may have been a victim of similar actions by Reyes Torres to contact the division confidentially at 787-744-7252.
