Why this matters: The change in leadership and controversy surrounding ADSEF may impact the agency’s ability to manage federal funds and administer social programs, affecting Puerto Rican families and communities.

Attorney Nicole Báez Ortiz took over on Monday, on an interim basis, the responsibilities of the Legal Division of the Family Socioeconomic Development Administration (ADSEF). The change comes amid a controversy between ADSEF’s former administrator, Blanca Medina Díaz, and Family Department Secretary Suzanne Roig. Medina Díaz, who was dismissed on September 29, filed a sworn statement on Monday in which she reiterated and expanded her claims about alleged pressure to sign contracts while she headed the agency.

According to La Fortaleza, Báez Ortiz arrives to ensure the continuity of the agency’s legal processes and to follow up on pending matters, particularly as the fiscal year closes. Among the issues raised are questions about the handling of federal funds and ADSEF administrative processes. Roig has rejected Medina Díaz’s allegations.
