The Popular Democratic Party (PPD) will hold its general assembly this Sunday, October 11, at the Complejo Ferial in Ponce. Party president Pablo José Hernández Rivera, who is also Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner in Washington, said at a Tuesday press conference at the party’s headquarters, La Pava, in Puerta de Tierra, that the event will demonstrate the strength of the party’s refounding and how well positioned it is two years before the 2028 general elections.
He called on all party members to attend, saying the day will be historic. Attendees will choose new members of the Junta de Gobierno, the party’s top governing body. Voting runs from 7:30 AM to 11:00 AM. Each voter may select five of the 10 candidates by accumulation, and voters in the San Juan and Bayamón senatorial districts will also elect their district representative.
Hernández Rivera declined to endorse any candidates. The assembly will also introduce the "Pava-Pass," a QR-code registration system. PPD secretary general Manuel Calderón Cerame said it will assign each party member a unique number to be used for identification at future events.
On expected turnout, Hernández Rivera noted the party’s last assembly, in Trujillo Alto in 2023, drew 2,000 people. He said reaching 2,500 or 3,000 would be a significant increase of 25% or 50%, but organizers are prepared to receive more.
