In September, 7,620 vehicles were sold in Puerto Rico, a 0.7% decrease from the same month last year, according to data from the Grupo Unido de Importadores de Automóviles (GUIA), or the United Group of Automobile Importers. This marks the second consecutive annual decline, following two months of growth. In the first nine months of the year, sales have fallen 12.6%.
September sales were distributed with 97.4% in the retail channel and 2.6% in fleet sales, which decreased 42% compared to the same month last year. SUV sales increased 7.4%, while pickup truck sales decreased 17.8%. Sales of electrified vehicles (hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric) grew 46% in the first nine months of the year, with hybrids seeing the largest increase at 58%.
Rosángela Guerra, president of GUIA, stated that the September results confirm the contraction trend in the automotive industry in Puerto Rico, citing factors such as inflation, high interest rates, and increased vehicle costs due to tariffs. The source article also states that 110,983 new vehicles were sold in 2025, a 9.0% decrease from the previous year and the worst results since 2020, though it does not make clear whether this is a full-year total.
