Why this matters: For Puerto Rico households and communities, the fluctuating reservoir levels mean that prudent water use is still necessary to maintain optimal levels, especially during the ongoing drought.

The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) reported that 16 of the island’s reservoirs are at a safe level, while the La Plata reservoir continues to register a decrease in its water level, dropping 8 centimeters to 43.54 meters. In contrast, the Carraízo reservoir, which had come within a centimeter of its Spilling band, had a small gate opened to release water after heavy rains.

The reservoir’s level rose to 40.94 meters, just 1 centimeter below the spilling threshold. AAA Executive President Luis Reinaldo González Delgado stated that the water release is a safety measure and does not pose a risk to communities downstream. Other reservoirs, such as Toa Vaca and Río Blanco, also showed changes in their water levels, with some increasing and others decreasing.

The AAA urged customers to maintain prudent water use to keep optimal levels in the reservoirs.
