The Department of Justice confirmed to Representative Ramón Torres that the Public Order Division is investigating José 'Memo' González’s committee, a former Arecibo mayoral candidate, for alleged electoral irregularities related to the cloning of electoral cards during 2024. Authorities have started the process of summoning witnesses and taking sworn statements. Possible referrals and the filing of charges are also being evaluated, if necessary.

The case was referred to the Office of the Secretary of Justice on September 15, and this week it was certified to the State Elections Commission that it was referred to the Independent Prosecutor’s Panel (PFEI) office. Torres questioned the time it took to process the case and stated that it requires urgent attention, as electoral processes rely on public trust.

This is reportedly the first case in which a prosecutor is seeking defense for a potential accused.
