The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) opened a gate at the Carraízo reservoir for the second time in four days to prevent a possible overflow. On Sunday morning, the reservoir’s water level was 40.96 meters, just above the 40.95-meter overflow threshold. The AAA said the controlled release of water allows the authority to manage the incoming water and conserve reserves for potential future droughts.
This comes after the reservoir was under a rationing plan in August and early September due to drought. Recent rainfall has brought the reservoir to a safe level, although the area remains under moderate drought conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasted showers and thunderstorms for Sunday due to a trough.
The AAA had also opened a small gate at the reservoir on Thursday to prevent an overflow.
