The National Weather Service (NWS) in San Juan issued a flood advisory for six Puerto Rico municipalities on Sunday due to heavy rains associated with thunderstorms. The advisory is in effect until 3:00 PM for Bayamón, Cataño, Dorado, Guaynabo, San Juan, and Toa Baja. According to the NWS, Doppler radar detected heavy rain at 12:49 PM and between one and two inches of rain had already fallen in the area, with an additional one to two inches expected, which could cause minor flooding in urban areas, low-lying areas, and places with drainage problems.
The agency urged drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roads and to seek alternative routes when encountering water accumulations. The NWS had anticipated a Sunday with variable conditions, marked by the passage of scattered showers in the morning and the development of more rain activity in sectors of the interior and northwest of the island in the afternoon.
The humidity moving over the region, along with instability in the upper levels of the atmosphere, will favor the formation of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. The weather pattern will be influenced by a low-pressure system in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere, which will increase instability and favor the development of showers and thunderstorms.
The forecast also anticipates shower and thunderstorm activity for Monday, with more organized and slow-moving rains possible on Tuesday and Wednesday, posing a risk of urban flooding, small streams, and flash flooding.
