The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for the southern Puerto Rico towns of Arroyo, Guayama and Salinas on Monday due to heavy rains that could cause water to pool on roads, low-lying areas and spots with drainage problems. The warning is in effect until 9:30 PM. Monday, after Doppler radar detected intense showers and possible thunderstorms over the area at 7:21 PM. According to the agency, some areas had already recorded up to two inches of rain, with localized accumulations of up to 2.5 inches, and an additional one to two inches is expected, which could cause minor flooding in vulnerable sectors.
The Weather Service warned that the rain could raise the level of small streams and channels that are normally dry, along with flooding in urban zones and water over roadways. Sectors that could experience flooding include Guayama, Salinas, Arroyo, Coquí, Jobos, Olimpo, Coco, Vázquez, Corazón, Buena Vista, Palmas, Playita, La Plena, Central Aguirre, Yaurel and Las Ochenta.
The agency urged drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roads and to seek alternate routes, noting that many flood-related deaths occur when people try to drive through flooded areas. It also advised extra caution at night, when it is harder to spot water hazards on roads and flood-prone areas.
