A 45-year-old man, Miguel Ángel Santiago Aponte, faces charges of attempted murder, elder abuse, and weapons law violations after allegedly attacking his mother and stepfather with a knife in Aibonito, Puerto Rico, on Monday. According to a police report, Santiago Aponte, a resident of Aibonito, allegedly attacked the elderly couple, causing open wounds on different parts of their bodies.
Agent Víctor Ortiz consulted with prosecutor Lourdes Cruz Vélez, who ordered charges of attempted murder, two counts of elder abuse, and two counts of carrying and using a bladed weapon. The evidence was presented to Judge Roberto Capestany Quiñones of the Aibonito Court, who found probable cause for arrest and set a $375,000 bond, which Santiago Aponte did not post.
As a result, he will be admitted to the Las Cucharas Penitentiary Complex in Ponce. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 26, 2026. The investigation was led by agents from the Robbery, Extortion, Property Crimes, Assaults, and Missing Persons Division of the Aibonito Criminal Investigations Corps (CIC), under the supervision of Sergeant Arnold García and Lieutenant Héctor Maldonado.
