In Bayamón, Puerto Rico, the Police are investigating the death of 51-year-old Jorge Nazario Rojas, who died Tuesday night after being shot by his 22-year-old son while they were cleaning firearms at their home. According to Telenoticias, the incident occurred when the gun the young man was handling discharged and hit his father. Family members called 911 and an ambulance took Nazario Rojas to the Río Piedras Medical Center, where he died about an hour later while receiving medical attention.
Authorities are investigating whether the shot was the result of an involuntary action or negligence in handling the gun. The case is preliminarily classified as an unfortunate incident. The Police are conducting interviews and waiting for the results of forensic tests to establish the circumstances of the shot.
Although it is initially being investigated as an accident, authorities do not rule out the possibility of filing criminal charges against the son if negligence is found. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be consulted with the Prosecutor’s Office to determine how to proceed. The Police explained that they continue to gather information to determine the circumstances of the incident.
