At a glance

  • The Infrastructure Financing Authority (AFI) will receive the funds and hire a company to evaluate the project’s viability
  • The evaluation will determine if the Government’s request for an additional $7 million is authorized

Why this matters: The rehabilitation of the wells could improve access to water for households and communities in the north of the island, reducing reliance on other sources.

In Puerto Rico, the Oversight Board approved $2.4 million from the emergency fund to initiate the process of rehabilitating wells of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) in the north of the island. The funds will be transferred to the Infrastructure Financing Authority (AFI), and the next step will be to hire a company to evaluate the viability of the project.

The evaluation will determine the production capacity of the wells, water quality, potential environmental impact, rehabilitation costs, and the feasibility of maintaining the facilities operating in the long term. The results will allow determining if the disbursement of the additional $7 million requested by the Government is authorized.
