Judge Ginny M. Vélez Carreras of the Ponce court found probable cause for arrest against Luis Sánchez Torres, 52, a resident of Yauco, on charges of first-degree murder, bearing, transporting or using firearms without a license, and shooting or aiming firearms. The charges stem from June 6 at 10:23 PM, at the intersection of Reina and Mercurio streets near the Remanso de Paz housing in Ponce, where Sánchez Torres allegedly shot Dennis Irizarry Rosa, 46, a homeless person, killing him on a sidewalk.
The victim had a criminal record for murder, violations of the Controlled Substances Act, kidnapping, and firearms-law infractions. The charges were filed by prosecutor Juan C. Molina, and the investigation was handled by agent José González Alameda under the supervision of Lieutenant Félix Guilbe Lugo and Daniel Justiniano, director of the Ponce Criminal Investigation Corps.
Sánchez Torres was released after posting $60,000 bail, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for November 3.
