Puerto Rico’s women’s 40+ water polo team opened its run at the Pan American Masters Water Polo Championship in Argentina with a victory, beating Brazil’s Minas Brasília 35+ team 16-9 in its first tournament match. The Puerto Ricans dominated the first three periods 4-1, 7-4 and 4-2, while Brazil took the final period 2-1. Four players led Puerto Rico’s scoring with three goals each: Paola Medina, Angélica García, Vanessa Kerr and Francisca Salib.

Alison Pardon was named the match’s best goalkeeper. Joseline Collazo of the Water Polo Commission of the Puerto Rican Swimming Federation said the team entered the water with enthusiasm and energy, showing its competitive capacity from the first quarter and building a lead that carried it to the win. Puerto Rico returns to the pool on Thursday at 1:00 PM, when it faces Brazil’s Passarinho 45+ team looking to build on its strong start in the international tournament.
