A man died Saturday morning after his car struck a concrete electric utility pole in front of an elementary school in Juana Díaz, the Puerto Rico Police Bureau reported. The crash occurred at about 6:33 AM on PR-14, past the El Jíbaro restaurant and in front of the Pedro Colón Santiago school in the Jacaguas neighborhood.
According to the police report, a call to the 9-1-1 Emergency System alerted police to a car accident, and when units arrived they found a man with severe injuries that caused his death at the scene. The victim was identified as Roberto Rodríguez Colón, 49, a resident of Juana Díaz. Police said he was driving a gray 2013 Hyundai Veloster along the road at a speed above the legal limit, which did not allow him to maintain control of the steering wheel; he veered to his right and hit the front of the vehicle against a concrete electric power pole.
Agents from the Highway Patrol Division of Ponce, together with the prosecutor on duty, are investigating.
