DACO Investigates Reported Propane Price Increases in Puerto Rico

Published Oct 26, 2026, 6:45 PM ASTvia WAPA TV

Why this matters: Propane is used for cooking and water heating in many Puerto Rico homes, especially in areas without natural gas service, so unexplained price hikes hit household budgets directly.

Acting Consumer Affairs Department (DACO) Secretary Erwin Álvarez said a reported increase in the price of propane gas should not occur, because there are no market indicators that would justify it. Both social media posts and businesses have announced an increase in the cost of propane gas.

In response, Álvarez said the agency has opened an investigation to identify the origin of this new increase. He did not rule out taking action against businesses that have raised the price of propane gas without justification.
