Why this matters: The case hits a worry for many Puerto Rican families with elders in care homes: a relative’s debit card and benefits can be drained by the very person hired to help, here $7,137.42 over three months in Camuy.

A prosecutor in Puerto Rico filed criminal charges on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, against Yesenia Vélez Ramos, 47, a resident of Camuy who worked as a caregiver at a home for elderly adults in that town. Prosecutor Darelys M. Alicea charged her with fraud, abuse of an elderly person, illegal appropriation, and illegal appropriation of identity.

According to an investigation by Sergeant Ángel Pérez Rosario of the Arecibo Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC), between May and July of this year Vélez Ramos allegedly took a ATH debit card belonging to a 78-year-old resident of the home and made several transactions totaling $7,137.42. The evidence was presented before Judge Vidal Vélez Díaz of the Arecibo court, who found probable cause for arrest and set bail at $16,000, which the defendant posted.
