Chasing Mayagüez’s Haunted Mustang: A Halloween Visit to an Abandoned House Legend

Published Oct 27, 2026, 10:40 PM ASTvia Primera Hora

A Puerto Rico columnist finally tracked down the famous 'haunted Mustang' house in a rural barrio of Mayagüez, visiting on a Sunday in October to coincide with the Halloween season. On a first attempt, made while already in Mayagüez documenting other cars, he gave up at dusk after circling country roads, later realizing he had been very close.

On the second try, after passing through desolate areas of tall brush and abandoned houses, he spotted a familiar three-story structure on a slope inside the Bateyes barrio: the skeleton of a large house with no doors or windows, only rusted grilles remaining. In its carport sat a partially dismantled, rusted old Mustang that appears to have once been on fire, its interior stripped to burned metal, its hood missing to expose a partially disassembled V8 engine, though structurally it looks straight and undamaged.

An old horseshoe amulet hangs at the carport entrance. Local legends about the decades-long abandonment mention a contentious divorce, severe psychiatric problems, a lottery win that brought misfortune, and, most persistently, a father who made a pact with the devil to restore the family’s finances, after which paranormal events drove the family out, leaving the Mustang behind.

Stories say theft attempts failed when tow chains broke, and a passing resident warned him the place is haunted.
