World’s Largest Sailing Ship Picks Puerto Rico as Caribbean Home Port

Why this matters: Home-port operations let visitors bookend sailings with nights in San Juan hotels, restaurants and transport, spending that a purely transit call would not leave on the island.

Puerto Rico has been chosen as the Caribbean home port for the Orient Express Corinthian, a luxury vessel that the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (CTPR) describes as the largest sailing ship in the world and the entry of the storied luxury travel brand into cruising. The ship, with 54 suites and capacity for 110 passengers, has three departures scheduled from San Juan for its inaugural Caribbean season, between October 2026 and January 2027.

Governor Jenniffer González Colón said Puerto Rico continues to raise its global luxury tourism positioning and that the brand’s arrival helps diversify tourism segments that generate economic activity for the island. CTPR executive director Willianette Robles Cancel said the San Juan selection responds to the strategy of positioning the destination among high-spending traveler markets. The ship’s dining offer includes five restaurants and private dining rooms led by French chef Yannick Alléno, a Michelin-recognized chef, and its propulsion combines wind power, natural gas and electric motors, technology the Tourism Company says reduces vibrations and noise.

Passengers starting itineraries in Puerto Rico could extend their stays, using lodging, dining, transport and other tourism services. The operation adds to San Juan’s cruise high season, which runs to April 2027; San Juan Cruise Port estimates 1.3 million travelers will arrive, with 529 calls, of which 243 are home-port operations and 286 transit.
