The Palmeras development in the Florida Afuera neighborhood of Barceloneta, Puerto Rico completed the handover of its 38 single-family homes on Saturday, after the government led distribution of the final 22 residences. The $11,586,200 project, funded through the federal Community Development Block Grant-Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) program, delivered its first 16 units in June 2026, one year after groundbreaking in June 2025.
The homes, aimed at eligible participants of the Housing Department’s Single-Family Housing Program, require families to meet program requirements and hold a housing voucher. Each three-bedroom, two-bathroom house is equipped with photovoltaic systems and battery storage, solar water heaters, water cisterns, refrigerators, stoves and ceiling fans, intended to give families greater autonomy during power and drinking water outages.
The total investment works out to about $304,900 per residence. Governor Jenniffer González Colón said the completion fulfills the commitment to turn the land into safe homes for beneficiary families. Housing Secretary Luis Augusto Martínez Román highlighted the conversion of federal funds into housing solutions with resilience measures, while Barceloneta Mayor Wanda Soler Rosario called it a new opportunity for the 38 families.
The Housing Department is also pursuing similar single-family projects in Naguabo, Guayama, Humacao, Ponce and Añasco.
