Yamila Monserrate Flores, an 18-year-old driver, died early Friday morning in a single-vehicle crash reported at about 2:49 AM at kilometer 2.4 of road PR-30 in Caguas, near the exit for the Plaza Centro mall, in the direction of Gurabo. According to NotiCentro sources, she had attended a costume party where she was offered alcoholic drinks but refused them because she planned to drive.
Before the crash, she had dropped a friend off at the friend’s home, then continued toward her own residence in Gurabo. Lieutenant Julio Medina Berríos, director of the Highway Patrol Division in Caguas, said the crash occurred five to eight minutes from her home, and that the 9-1-1 Emergency System received a call alerting about the collision around 2:49 AM. Officers arriving at the scene found a Mazda 3 that had struck a metal fence.
Her body was found about 80 feet from the car; she had been ejected, fell under the bridge, and suffered multiple traumas that killed her on the spot. Medina Berríos said a possible cause was that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, a hypothesis based on the absence of debris or skid marks on the pavement; he also noted the vehicle carried a spare tire in poor condition. The circumstances remain under investigation.
