Why this matters: For Puerto Rico travelers and the island’s tourism sector, the route restores a Mexico City link lost for two decades and adds more than 34,500 seats a year, with an estimated $13.5 million annual economic impact the government is counting on.

Aeroméxico will begin direct flights between Puerto Rico’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Isla Verde and Mexico City in June 2027, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company announced on Saturday, November 7, 2026, ending two decades without this air connection to the Latin American country. Ticket sales start on Monday, November 9. Governor Jenniffer González Colón and Tourism Company executive director Willianette Robles Cancel said restoring the route marks progress in strengthening tourism and commercial ties between Mexico and Puerto Rico.

There will be four weekly frequencies starting in June 2027. The new route is estimated to have an annual economic impact of $13.5 million and add more than 34,500 seats to the island’s air inventory. González Colón said her administration has worked to recover the Mexico City connection, calling Mexico a market of opportunities for attracting tourists and for trade, investment and economic development.

Robles Cancel said the Aeroméxico alliance diversifies Puerto Rico’s air access, strengthens its presence in the Mexican market and expands international connectivity alternatives. Giancarlo Mulinelli, Aeroméxico’s senior vice president of global sales, said the airline is pleased to begin operations to Puerto Rico, which he described as one of the world’s most important cruise ports, and said the route strengthens the Aeroméxico-Delta alliance network. Aeroméxico is a member of the SkyTeam global alliance.
