Known for: kayaking a glowing bioluminescent lagoon
Laguna Grande, in the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve near Fajardo, is the most accessible bioluminescent lagoon from the San Juan metro area. It isn't a true lake but a channel-fed lagoon ringed by red mangroves, where the same light-producing dinoflagellates that glow in Vieques' Mosquito Bay light up the water at night.
Tours reach it by kayaking a long, narrow mangrove channel after dark — a guided paddle that's part of the appeal. The glow is subtler than Vieques' but easy to reach for a night trip, and best seen on moonless nights well away from city light. Trips depart from the Fajardo area.
