Laguna Grande

Known for: kayaking a glowing bioluminescent lagoon

  • kayak
  • late-night

Laguna Grande, in the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve near Fajardo, is the most accessible bioluminescent lagoon from the San Juan metro area. It isn't a true lake but a channel-fed lagoon ringed by red mangroves, where the same light-producing dinoflagellates that glow in Vieques' Mosquito Bay light up the water at night. Tours reach it by kayaking a long, narrow mangrove channel after dark — a guided paddle that's part of the appeal. The glow is subtler than Vieques' but easy to reach for a night trip, and best seen on moonless nights well away from city light. Trips depart from the Fajardo area.

Puerto del Rey Marina

Known for: the Caribbean's largest marina, gateway to island-hopping sails

  • sail
  • day

Puerto del Rey, on Puerto Rico's east coast near Fajardo, is the largest marina in the Caribbean, with berths for well over a thousand boats. It's the main jumping-off point for sailing and powerboat trips to the offshore cays of La Cordillera — Icacos, Palomino, Diablo — and onward to Vieques and Culebra. Most visitors come to join a catamaran day sail or charter: a typical trip combines snorkeling over reefs, time on a deserted cay beach, and drinks on the water. Operators run from the marina year-round; the protected east-coast waters and steady trade winds make it prime sailing ground.
