The refuge names Monte Pirata as an entrance but lists no trail up it, and a Vieques conservation group said in December 2022 the summit had been closed to the public for over 20 years. Ask the refuge office before you go. (TICATOVE, Grupo de Conservación de Vieques)

Before you go

  • The refuge is open year-round and charges no entrance fee. (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service)
  • TICATOVE, a Vieques conservation group, said in December 2022 that the summit had been closed to the general public for over 20 years, and that the Fish and Wildlife Service would build a parking lot, open a trail and put up signs before it reopens. The refuge's own pages list no trail up the mountain. (TICATOVE, Grupo de Conservación de Vieques)
  • Stay on the refuge's roads and trails and carry drinking water. (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service)
  • Roads on the island's west end are often unmarked one-lane dirt tracks where it is easy to get lost; fill the tank first. (Wikivoyage)
