Vieques, also known as Esperanza, is located in the Eastern Islands of Puerto Rico and features pristine, undisturbed reefs. The area is known for its world-famous Mosquito Bay bioluminescence and steady E trade winds, which create a reliable flat-water kite zone on the south shore. Diving and kiting are popular activities in the area, which offers protected reefs with visibility of 50–70 ft and trade winds of 15–22 kt. The location is suitable for these activities year-round, with the best kiting conditions from November to April and bioluminescence visible on moonless nights.

Mosquito Bay (Bahía Bioluminiscente)

Known for: the world's brightest bioluminescent bay

  • kayak
  • late-night

Mosquito Bay (Bahía Bioluminiscente) on the south coast of Vieques is recognized by Guinness World Records as the brightest bioluminescent bay on Earth. Its glow comes from a dense population of dinoflagellates — single-celled organisms that flash blue-green light when the water is disturbed — concentrated by the bay's narrow mouth, surrounding mangroves, and warm, nutrient-rich water. The experience is best on dark, moonless nights, when every paddle stroke and fish dart leaves a trail of light. Visits are by guided kayak or electric-boat tour only; swimming is prohibited to protect the ecosystem, and sunscreen and bug spray are discouraged in the water. Tours run from the town of Esperanza.
