The United Nations' Decolonization Committee has approved a resolution recognizing Puerto Rico's right to self-determination and independence. The resolution, presented by Cuba's ambassador to the UN, Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, was approved by consensus and calls on the UN General Assembly to revisit Puerto Rico's political case.
The resolution denounces the imposition of the Promesa law, recognizes Puerto Rico's Latin American and Caribbean character, and recalls the repression of the independence movement and the bombings and training on the island of Vieques. The resolution was supported by the Non-Aligned Movement, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter, Iran, and Nicaragua.
Cuba's ambassador criticized the US government's lack of willingness to cooperate with the committee and its aggressive rhetoric and actions, which he said threaten international peace and security. Venezuela, which also supported the resolution, was mentioned as a country where the US has intervened, with the US exercising power over the government.
