Loíza Left Without Water Due to AAA's Wrong Decision

Updated Jun 22, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

The Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) will not ration water in Loíza, but will evaluate the decision to carry out a dredging operation that left the municipality without water service over the Father's Day weekend. Loíza Mayor Julia Nazario and Canóvanas Mayor Lornna Soto met with AAA President Luis González at the Loíza Valley plant, where they were initially told that a water rationing plan would be discussed. However, González informed them that rationing was not necessary.

The dredging operation, which was not supposed to be done during this time of year, caused the water outage. Nazario stated that no one gave instructions for the dredging work to be done over the weekend, and that those responsible will be held accountable. The AAA's Communications Office confirmed that the sediment removal work was done over the weekend, which is not supposed to be done during a drought.

The decision to dredge was made by the AAA's Operations Department, following an order from Vice President Luis Ortiz. The president of the AAA has ordered the removal of the sediments and will evaluate the situation.
