Luis R. González Delgado, executive president of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA), was set to give a Thursday update on the island's drought conditions and mitigation measures. Governor Jennifer González said Wednesday that authorities are evaluating possible water restrictions as early as next week or by the end of July, due to declining levels at several reservoirs.
In a Facebook livestream, she named the municipalities under watch: San Lorenzo (specifically the Valle del Río Jaguar sector), Comerío, Río Grande, Canóvanas, Loíza, and Cidra. She said mayors would be notified in advance of any measures and that a plan already exists for Canóvanas, Río Grande, and Loíza but remains suspended since those areas currently have sufficient water supply. The remarks followed a Drought Committee meeting at La Fortaleza, where officials reported that 14 of Puerto Rico's 19 reservoirs have shown declining levels, with the Carraízo and Cidra reservoirs currently under observation.
Climate projections were described as unfavorable.
