Updated Jun 22, 2026 · via Primera Hora

Judge María L. Camareno of the Bayamón Tribunal sentenced 69-year-old Luis E. Cabán Rosario to three years of house arrest for negligent homicide. The charge stems from the death of his 79-year-old wife, Ignacia Santiago Labrador, on February 11 at their residence in the Ciara del Sol urbanization in Vega Baja.

According to the investigation, Cabán Rosario was cleaning a firearm when it allegedly discharged, striking his wife in the right thigh, causing a fatal injury. The couple had been together for 40 years and had two children. No records of domestic violence complaints were found. Authorities seized 13 firearms, 15 magazines, and 1,442 rounds of ammunition from the residence, as Cabán Rosario holds a firearms license.

The time Cabán Rosario spent under summary judgment will be credited towards his house arrest term. The defendant pleaded guilty but did not reach a plea agreement with the prosecution.
