Drought Threatens to Cause Water Interruptions in Several Municipalities

Updated Jun 24, 2026 · via Primera Hora

Governor Jenniffer González Colón announced that the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) may activate a plan for scheduled water interruptions in several municipalities affected by drought, if it does not rain in the coming weeks. The first municipalities to be affected are Canóvanas and Loíza, which could experience water service limitations as early as this Friday or next Monday.

Other municipalities that may be affected include Río Grande, Juncos, San Lorenzo, Las Piedras, Humacao, and Ceiba. AAA President Luis Reinaldo González Delgado described the affected area as the eastern third of the island, which relies on river water for its water treatment plants.

The governor emphasized that the plans are for scheduled interruptions, not rationing, and called on citizens to be prudent in their water usage. The AAA will meet with the mayors of Canóvanas and Loíza to detail the schedule of interruptions, which will be limited to daytime hours, with service restored by 6:00 p.m.
