Former PNP Mayor of Luquillo Passes Away

Juan Benabe Guzmán, the first mayor of Luquillo from the New Progressive Party (PNP), has passed away at the age of 101, according to Carlos 'Johnny' Méndez, President of the House of Representatives. Guzmán served as mayor from 1969 to 1972 and again from 1977 to 1984. During his tenure, he implemented various projects, including the creation of the Diagnostic and Treatment Center (CDT) with 24-hour medical services, the construction of parks and sports fields, and the establishment of the Luquillo Municipal Band.

He also promoted education by constructing schools, including the Isidro A. Sánchez high school and the Camilo Valles Matienzo elementary school, and facilitated the establishment of the Puerto Rico Junior College and the University of Turabo. Additionally, Guzmán expanded access to housing through the construction of public housing complexes, such as El Cemí, Yukiyú, and Playa Azul.

Méndez praised Guzmán's legacy, describing him as a dedicated public servant who left a lasting impact on Luquillo.
