Hundreds of Families in Vieques Left Without Water

Updated Jul 5, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Around 800 families in the southern area of Vieques are without potable water due to two consecutive electrical failures at the Río Blanco filter plant in Naguabo, according to the Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AAA). The recovery has been slower than usual due to high water consumption during the July 4th weekend, which has made it difficult to stabilize the distribution system. As a result, the water network was emptied, affecting the water service in different areas of the island.

The mayor of Vieques, José A. Corcino Acevedo, stated that only the southern area of the island is currently without service. The Municipality of Vieques is providing potable water in the communities of Esperanza and Martineau.

The situation is part of a larger crisis faced by the AAA, with several municipalities experiencing problems with the water service due to various reasons, including breaks in the Superacueducto and the discovery of oil in a filtration plant in Canóvanas.
