Puerto Rican sprinter José Figueroa made his debut in the Diamond League on Saturday, finishing eighth in the 200 meters with a time of 20.34 seconds. The event was won by American Tate Taylor with a time of 19.75 seconds. Figueroa had recently broken the 20-second barrier in the 200 meters, achieving a historic time of 19.87 seconds the previous week.
According to Carlos Guzmán, director of the Puerto Rico Athletics Federation, the competition was a valuable experience for Figueroa, who is considered a top medal candidate for Puerto Rico in the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games. Figueroa currently holds the eighth-best time in the world this season. The athlete's participation in the next Diamond League event, scheduled for Monaco, is uncertain.
Few Puerto Rican athletes have consistently competed in the Diamond League, with Olympic medalists Javier Culson and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn being notable exceptions.
