The Police have reclassified the death of 36-year-old nurse Jennifer M. Torres Castro as a murder after the Institute of Forensic Sciences (ICF) confirmed that she was a victim of a violent crime. Torres Castro was found dead in her home in Caguas, and Carlos Manuel Estefano Pino, 67, was detained as a person of interest.
The ICF's forensic pathologist, Paola Luna García, determined that the cause of death was violent. Initially, the Police reported the case as a death with an undetermined cause. Estefano Pino was previously released from prison in 2018 after serving part of an 85-year sentence for the murder of a 22-year-old woman in 1990.
The president of the Parole Board, Samuel Silva Rosas, stated that Estefano Pino was arrested due to suspicion of murder, despite complying with his adjustment plan and attending annual hearings. The victim's family has denied that she had a relationship with Estefano Pino. The case is currently under investigation, and the Justice Department has not yet responded to inquiries about whether charges will be filed.
