Updated Jul 9, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Thousands of LUMA Energy customers lost power Thursday morning due to load-shedding caused by a generation shortfall after the abrupt shutdown of Unit #2 at the AES Puerto Rico plant. LUMA's outage portal showed 104,018 customers without service at 10:00 a.m., but that number dropped sharply to 16,790 by about 11:45 a.m. Of those, roughly 6,694 outages were linked to planned system improvements and about 10,096 to unplanned interruptions.

LUMA said on social media that the generation-related load-shedding was stabilizing and service was being progressively restored. At 11:45 a.m., the Arecibo region was hardest hit with 5,728 customers without power, followed by Caguas with 4,849 affected. The company said it remained in continuous communication with power generators to support an efficient recovery and ensure the system operates as stably as possible.
