Two More MVC Members Defect to PPD, Says Resident Commissioner Hernández

Updated Jul 9, 2026 · via Primera Hora

The Popular Democratic Party (PPD) announced two more defections from the Movimiento Victoria Ciudadana (MVC). PPD president and Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera said in a written statement that Edwin Cornier, described as the youngest municipal legislator elected in Puerto Rico's history who had held a seat under the MVC banner, and student Dariel González formally joined the PPD. Hernández said their move sends a message that the PPD has again become "the home" of those seeking a better Puerto Rico.

He attributed such affiliations to widespread fatigue with corruption he said has characterized the government of the New Progressive Party (PNP), as well as to the PPD's internal "refundación" (refounding) process, which he claims has positioned the party as a real alternative to the PNP. He described the PPD as more serious, organized and effective. This follows a January announcement that then-MVC electoral commissioner Olvin Valentín joined the PPD, citing an "honest reflection" on the current political context.

After the 2024 general elections, the MVC lost its electoral franchise for failing to meet the required straight-ticket vote threshold, but in November 2025 the State Elections Commission (CEE) recertified its registration as a party after it completed the required signature collection.
