Red Flag Warning Issued for Wildfire Risk in Southern, Western Puerto Rico

Updated Jul 11, 2026 · via Primera Hora

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning at midday for portions of southern and western Puerto Rico due to a high probability of wildfires, active until 5:00 p.m. The warning states the greatest fire danger is expected from late morning through the afternoon, driven by fresh east to east-southeast winds with strong gusts and low relative humidity, creating high-risk conditions for fire spread.

These conditions, combined with extremely dry vegetation, are expected to favor rapid spread of any fire that starts. Authorities asked residents not to discard cigarette butts, glass bottles, or other flammable items onto dry grass, as such actions could cause dry areas to ignite quickly.
