Published Jul 15, 2026 · via El Nuevo Día

Waldemar Quiles Pérez, Secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA), was bitten by a dog he had rescued, named Pistacho. The incident occurred when Quiles Pérez tried to remove a paper from the floor that the dog was sniffing. The dog, which had previously shown aggressive behavior, bit Quiles Pérez on the knee and hand.

Quiles Pérez was able to defend himself and escape, but the dog will be euthanized on Thursday after evaluations with veterinarians and animal behavior specialists. Quiles Pérez had taken in the dog, which had appeared at his residence, and had even taken it to training for three weeks. However, the dog's aggressive behavior continued, and Quiles Pérez was attacked while trying to care for it.

The incident highlights the importance of careful evaluation and handling of rescued animals.
