The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) has begun a technical evaluation due to a possible reduction in bioluminescence levels in Puerto Mosquito Bay, Vieques. Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez confirmed that the technical staff of the Auxiliary Secretariat of Conservation and Research started evaluating bioluminescence measures after detecting a low amount of 'Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense', the organism responsible for bioluminescence in the bay.
The evaluation is being carried out by staff from the Auxiliary Secretariat of Conservation and Research, who are examining bioluminescence measurements in this ecosystem. Puerto Mosquito Bay is internationally recognized for its intense bioluminescence and has been featured in the Guinness World Records as one of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world. Quiles Pérez stated that the bay is one of the most beautiful in the world, a treasure of Puerto Rico, and its ecological diversity is essential, which is why this evaluation has been commissioned.
