Akil Mitchell: From Champion with Criollos to Cheering from the Stands in 2026

Akil Mitchell, a key player for the Criollos de Caguas, was part of the championship team in 2024 alongside Travis Trice and Louis King. Although he couldn't join the team in 2026 due to his commitment in Japan, where he won a championship with Nagasaki Velca, Mitchell has been supporting the Criollos from the stands during their semifinal series against the Cangrejeros de Santurce. Mitchell, 34, analyzed the series, stating that the Criollos need to play with more spirit and calmness, especially against the physical Cangrejeros.

The Criollos' absence of Mitchell was filled by Moses Brown, who led the team with 21 points and 12 rebounds in a game, helping them tie the series. Mitchell praised Brown, calling him 'duro' and a 'bestia', but noted that he still needs to learn. The Criollos took control of the series 3-2 after scoring 62 points in the second half of a game.

Mitchell, who will return to Japan in August, expressed his desire to play with the Criollos again but is bound by his contract and will not be able to play this summer.
