The Cuerpo de Investigaciones Criminales (CIC) of Fajardo is waiting for a court order to search the cellphone of Tyler Wilkin, a 35-year-old American found dead on July 10 while camping at La Selva beach in Luquillo. Captain Edwin Collazo González, director of the CIC, explained that the phone's content could help identify the motive for the crime, establish who Wilkin communicated with before his death, and detect potential suspects. Wilkin, a presumed investor from Ohio, had been living in Puerto Rico for about two years, specifically in the San Juan area. He had been camping alone since Wednesday, and his friends were scheduled to arrive on Friday, the same day his body was found.
A person walking on the beach early in the morning discovered the body and called the authorities, initially thinking it was a drowning victim. However, upon arrival, agents identified a head wound compatible with a gunshot. The body was found at a distance from Wilkin's campsite, and investigators are working on both areas as separate crime scenes. The Police interviewed people from nearby campsites, but no one reported hearing shots or identifying vehicles.
Some witnesses mentioned seeing a vehicle pass by, but their descriptions did not match. The investigation is also hindered by the lack of security footage, as the cameras from the Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales (DRNA) in the area were not functioning.
