A report highlights that sediment accumulation in several of Puerto Rico's reservoirs has, over the years, reduced water storage capacity and threatens water security. At Lake Caonillas in Utuado, more than 3.1 million cubic meters of sediment were deposited between 2012 and 2025, according to a rigorous geological study.
The findings indicate that several reservoirs in the central and southwestern regions of the island have lost a significant portion of their water storage capacity due to this sedimentation.
