Governor Announces $30 Million Vieques-Ceiba 'Short Route' Ferry Link by Summer 2028

Why this matters: For Vieques residents, whose trips to the main island depend on the sea crossing, the projected 15-minute saving per trip and the move to Ceiba would come from a $30 million ATI rebuild of the Mosquito Dock that still needs Army Corps approval.

Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González announced that, following the signing of an agreement to speed up the rehabilitation of the Mosquito Pier (Muelle Mosquito) in Vieques, the sea crossing between Vieques and the port in Ceiba could be faster by the summer of 2028. The so-called "Short Route" would be made possible by a $30 million investment by the Integrated Transport Authority (ATI).

According to government projections, the maritime distance would shrink from about 11 to 7.6 nautical miles, an estimated saving of 15 minutes per trip. The project includes improvements to waiting areas, ticketing, boarding and disembarking, as well as access for passengers, vehicles and cargo. The design of the new facilities is complete, but approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is pending.

The ATI will carry out the rehabilitation, while the town of Vieques will retain ownership of the pier.
