Gabriel 'Gaby' Hernández, president of the Federation of Mayors of Puerto Rico, and Javier García Cintrón, executive director of the Municipal Revenue Collection Center (CRIM), met with Hiram Torres Montalvo, the mayor-elect of Cataño, to discuss the fiscal impact of the inventory tax. The tax represents $17 million of Cataño's $49.5 million municipal budget, or 30%.
Hernández emphasized the need to determine how to replace this revenue source and protect services for residents before making any changes. The meeting also allowed for discussion of legislative initiatives and issues that the incoming Cataño administration will need to review during the transition. Hernández offered the support of the Federation to evaluate proposals aimed at strengthening the fiscal health and functioning of municipalities.
