A failure in the electrical system left thousands of customers without service in the early hours of Wednesday in parts of Santurce, Hato Rey and other areas of San Juan. According to information provided by LUMA Energy, about 27,153 customers were without electric service while the situation was being addressed. LUMA personnel are inspecting transmission lines and substations in Santurce and Hato Rey to identify the fault, isolate it and begin restoring service safely.
During the early morning, images also circulated of an apparent explosion at electrical infrastructure. However, the consortium has not yet publicly stated whether that incident is related to the interruption, nor has it reported the specific cause of the outage. The hardest-hit regions are San Juan with 25,502 customers without power, followed by Arecibo with 880 and Bayamón with 319.
The outlet, Metro PR, said it would update the story as more information becomes available.
