According to the National Weather Service (NWS), Puerto Rico will experience a day marked by heat in the morning and heavy rain showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon on Tuesday. Local effects and daytime warming will be the main factors determining weather conditions. Temperatures above normal in the lower atmosphere will favor a high risk of heat, especially during late morning and early afternoon hours.
Despite the heat, atmospheric conditions will allow for deep convection in areas where warming and wind convergence are sufficient. The wind flow will be weak, so the rain showers and thunderstorms that develop could move slowly. In the afternoon, rain showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly over the interior, west, and northwest of Puerto Rico, where periods of intense rain could occur.
The main risks will include locally heavy rain, urban and small river flooding, frequent lightning, and excessive heat. Areas that received heavy rain on Monday could maintain flooding problems during the early hours of Tuesday, while new episodes of intense rain could cause localized flooding during the afternoon. The NWS anticipates a relative decrease in rainfall activity between Tuesday night and the early hours of Wednesday, before the arrival of a tropical wave.
